In support of improving connectivity, bringing more flights to Sri Guru Ram Das Jee International Airport, Amritsar- India.
The FlyAmritsar Initiative evolved as a focused approach for assisting in the development of Amritsar airport. We started this Initiative in 2016 taking forward the work as an advocacy, civil society public service initiative that our parent organisation Amritsar Vikas Manch started in late 1990’s keeping in view of the needs of global Punjabi population for flying directly to the holy city Amritsar. Our aim is to connect with different world airlines and governments to put forward our vision in order to encourage them to start direct flights to Amritsar ATQ.
Amritsar is the largest and most important city in Punjab and is a major commercial, cultural, and transportation center. It is also the center of Sikhism and the site of one of the important Sikhs’ place of worship—the Harmandir Sahib, or Golden Temple.
The Punjabi’s living abroad are very much interested to fly directly to Amritsar for paying obeisance at the most sacred Darbar Sahib Sri Amritsar which is a must visit place for them whenever they come to India. Besides these aspects ‘Amritsar’ is rated as 5th among 10 most visited places in the world.
Amritsar is a centre for the textile and chemical industries and also engages in food milling and processing, silk weaving, tanning, canning, and the manufacture of machinery. The city lies on the main highway from Delhi to Lahore- Pakistan, and is a major rail hub.
At present Amritsar’s Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport ATQ is served by 6 international airlines namely Qatar Airways, Turkmenistan Airlines, Uzbekistan Airways, Air Asia X, Malindo of Malaysia and Scoot of Singapore. These airlines are operating 42 international flights per week, along with Air India Express and Spice Jet operating flights to Dubai. The Amritsar- London -Toronto direct flight was the most successful flight of Air India in the history of the airline, that often had to offload passengers at the Amritsar airport due to overbooking. Even now Amritsar- Delhi- London indirect hub and spoke flight has won the distinction of being number one flight of Air India among its all international flights originating from Delhi in 2015-16.
The Amritsar Vikas Manch, a civil society non-governmental organization has been working since early 1990’s for the all-round development of Amritsar expressed sorrow over the step motherly attitude of the government towards Amritsar airport. Amritsar Vikas Manch patron Dr Charanjit Singh Gumtala reacted to the statement of Sh. Vishavjit Khanna, Secy Civil Aviation Punjab in which he said that the Punjab government is trying its best to increase the length of Chandigarh airport runway to 10500 ft., so that long haul flights to U.K may be started for the people in Punjab. The Manch patron has expressed surprise that the Punjab government is so worried to start U.K. flights from Chandigarh, but it never ever thought of making any efforts for restarting the withdrawn Amritsar – London -Toronto flights of Air India.
