We wish to bring it to your kind attention, the voice of your constituents and thousands of Canadians including permanent residents, students and their extended families, persistently asking for direct flights between Toronto/Vancouver and Amritsar. We would like to highlight few points in support of the demand:
- This year starting in April 2021, millions of devotees are expected to travel to Amritsar from across the world for 400th birth anniversary centennial of 9th Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Prakash purab celebrations. During the year-long celebrations and beyond, Amritsar would be the hub of pilgrimage & other associated activities. This is in addition to millions of travelers that normally travel from Canada and USA to Punjab, India for visiting their roots, meet with their loved ones and vice-versa.
- Amritsar is a preferred destination for the Punjabi Diaspora and Foreign Tourists who come here to pay obeisance at the Darbar Sahib (The Golden Temple), historical and other religious places including Ram Tirath, Durgiana Temple in the region. The Golden Temple in Amritsar alone hosts more than 35 million pilgrims annually.
- After the resumption of flights between both countries under air bubble agreements, both Air India and Air Canada resumed its direct flights to Toronto and also for the first time India’s National carrier launched direct flights between Delhi and Vancouver. It has now opened reservations for these direct flights till March 2022.
- It is pertinent to mention that Air India & Air Canada are already operating the direct flights to Toronto/Vancouver from Delhi that flies over the city of Amritsar. Air India can re-route these flights via Amritsar (Delhi-Amritsar-Toronto/Vancouver).
The launch of direct flights to Toronto/Vancouver in commemoration of celebrations for 400 years of Guru Teg Bahadur Gurpurab will benefit millions of travelers and send a message of goodwill around the World. The direct link has immense potential to bolster Indo-Canadian trade, commerce, tourism and bilateral relationships and also bring economic benefits to the farmers of both countries.
It is my humble request to you to intervene and also appeal to the Hon’ble Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau to guide and take personal interest in this matter, including reaching out to the Government of India, Ministry of Civil Aviation of India, Air India with the proposal to connect Amritsar with Toronto/Vancouver.
I also request you to kindly taking up the business case with the Canadian flag carrier Air Canada for initiation of a new route from Canada to Amritsar, as and when they expand their global flight operations in the coming months.
